22 lakh Punjabis are addicted to alcohol and 16 lakh to tobacco....victim needs barrier free services

#Mission barrier services Projected number of victims of substance use (Alcohol,Tobacco & Drugs) may vary from one study to other... the truth is all about the suffering of people living with substance use disorder and their family members . Govt. and NGOs need to look at the issue of underutilization of existing drug treatment and rehabilitation services in the Punjab . For example Punjab’s first government-run rehabilitation centre for addicts was opened in Amritsar in 2015, according to press reports the patient so far count reflects its failure to become a trusted facility. This, even as addicts flock to private centres in the city and elsewhere. Not once has the Rs 5-crore, 50-bed facility been filled to capacity.   According to the PGI study, while 22 lakh Punjabis are addicted to alcohol and 16 lakh to tobacco, less than 1 per cent may be hooked on drugs. The single most common substance used is alcohol (22 lakh), followed by tobacco (16 lakh)....

Alcohol kills 3.3 million people worldwide each year, more than AIDS...

Alcohol kills 3.3 million people worldwide each year, more than AIDS , tuberculosis and violence combined, the World Health Organization said Monday, warning that booze consumption was on the rise. Including drink driving, alcohol-induced violence and abuse, and a multitude of diseases and disorders, alcohol causes one in 20 deaths globally every year, the UN health agency said. “This actually translates into one death every 10 seconds,” Shekhar Saxena, who heads the WHO s Mental Health and Substance Abuse department, told reporters in Geneva. Alcohol caused some 3.3 million deaths in 2012, WHO said, equivalent to 5.9 percent of global deaths (7.6 percent for men and 4.0 percent for women). In comparison, HIV/AIDS is responsible for 2.8 percent, tuberculosis causes 1.7 percent of deaths and violence is responsible for just 0.9 percent, the study showed. More people in countries where alcohol consumption has traditionally been low, like China and India, are also increasingly taking up t...

Alcohol consumption behind most criminal cases: Police

KOZHIKODE: Alcohol is proving to be a key factor behind the murder cases being reported in the district. Police said of the total number of six murder cases reported in four months this year, five were committed under the influence of alcohol. Many other incidents in which intoxicated persons engage in arguments and manhandling were also reported. Influence of drugs and tobacco products are also pointed out as the major reason for clash between migrant labourers and locals. "The persons, under the influence of alcohol fail to realize the consequence of their action. Persons lose their reasoning skills and ability to control their emotions once they come under the influence of drugs and alcohol," said a police official. The latest of the murder cases involving liquor as villain was reported in Kozhikode rural police station limit on April 27. A 32-year-old from Thrissur was murdered by a Kottayam native with the support of two Tamil Nadu natives. Tussle between the vi...

Alert:Everyone's addicted to something...

It's not just cigarettes that are hard to quit – exercise, coffee, video games or shouting at Question Time are habit-forming too Michael Moran theguardian.com ,  Wednesday 26 February 2014  The 'runner’s high' that drives exercise addicts on is just one of the pleasure stimuli that make exercise the most addictive pastime in modern life. Photograph: Cultura/Moof/Getty Images It supposedly takes  10,000 hours to become an expert . But only 37 cigarettes to be an addict. A  new study reveals  social smokers actually smoke 37 cigarettes a week. At average rates that's over two and a half hours of solid smoking weekly. Social smokers are just addicts in denial. But the rest of us shouldn't be too quick to sneer. Addiction is part of the human condition. We're all addicted to something: it's just a question of owning up to your own particular poison. Video games In the anglophone west, there's a paucity of peril. Our ancestors a...

Police failed to act against illegal sale of liquor in the Kharghar village

Pehchaan Radio club view  We totally agree with the views and stand taken up by  Ms.Vanita Patil of Kharghar Gram Panchyat Navi Mumbai . It is the police who is failing in discharging their duty. Industry Experts are talking on the basis of popular beliefs about banning of alcohol at village level. It is the women who suffers most as daughter, wife and mother.  Industry experts have no evidence, they may be referring for those who are dependent  what about who is going to start today because of easy availability even by teenagers.  Interestingly, head line is given by TOI what industry expert says rather than views and concerns shared by  Ms.Patil.  NAVI MUMBAI: Tipplers from Kharghar continue their liquor consumption despite the local grampanchayat decision to ban liquor sale in villages under its jurisdiction.  The recently elected Kharghar panchayat reinforced the  alcohol ban  in the area. Local prohibition, however, has led to an...

India's "booziest state"????

The southern Indian state of Kerala, often referred to as God's own country, has the best socio-economic indicators in the country. But its alarming alcohol addiction is earning the state a name for all the wrong reasons as the crime rate there also increases. The god of choice here is Bacchus, the Roman deity of wine. College student Raj Kumar has been in an alcohol rehabilitation clinic for more than two months in the state's capital, Thiruvananthapuram . "I used to fight with my family members every day to feed my addiction," he said. The 22-year-old, who has been drinking for more than seven years, says he'll be lucky if he comes out well. "I used to get up feeling restless. For the last months since I have come here it is OK, but the urge to get back is still very strong." Kerala is one of India's most progressive states in terms of social welfare and quality of life, boasting the highest literacy rates, life expectancy and lowe...

Alcohol use leads to domestic violence

A new study from the  University of Tennessee, Knoxville  has suggested that  alcohol  use is more likely to lead to violence between partners than marijuana.  Research among college students found that men under the influence of alcohol are more likely to perpetrate physical, psychological or sexual aggression against their partners than men under the influence of marijuana. Women, on the other hand, were more likely to be physically and psychologically aggressive under the influence of alcohol but, unlike men, they were also more likely to be psychologically aggressive under the influence of marijuana. The research has implications for domestic violence intervention and prevention programs. The studies were conducted by Ryan Shorey, a psychology  doctoral student;  Gregory Stuart , a psychology professor; Todd Moore, an associate psychology professor; and James McNulty, an associate professor of social psychology at Florida State University. The res...

Alcohol, tobacco, drug use higher in mentally ill says study

Rates of smoking, drinking and drug use are significantly higher among those who have psychotic disorders than among those in the general population, a new US study has claimed.  The study by researchers at  Washington  University School of Medicine in St Louis and the University of Southern California is the largest ever assessment of substance use among people with severe psychiatric illness.  The finding is of particular concern because individuals with severe mental illness are more likely to die younger than people without severe psychiatric disorders, researchers said.  "These patients tend to pass away much younger, with estimates ranging from 12 to 25 years earlier than individuals in the general population," said first author Sarah M Hartz, assistant professor of psychiatry at Washington University.  "They don't die from drug overdoses or commit suicide - the kinds of things you might suspect in severe psychiatric illness. They die from heart disea...

Juvenile substance abusers in India.. No more limited to street children

A few months back, 14-year-old Vikram Batra (name changed) started behaving oddly. Normally quite a talkative boy, Vikram, started keeping to himself. On returning home from school, he would head straight to his room and remain locked there for hours at a stretch. Two month’s back, his mother, Vibha, an IT professional, received a call from the counsellor at Vikram’s school, a renowned private  institute in central Delhi. The counsellor told her that Vikram had become unresponsive in class and was often lost in his own world. One day, when Vikram was out, Vibha searched his room and found three empty bottles of white solvent in his school bag, traces of which she had occasionally seen on Vikram’s lips. She called the counsellor and told her that the child was into substance abuse. Substance abuse among Indian children is growing at a much faster rate than previously believed. And contrary to popular belief, the addicts are not just street children. A first-of-its kin...

The Indian alcohol Economy...needs Detox & Rehabilitation?

The alcohol economy   State governments are becoming more and more dependent on alcohol revenue to pay their bills. The increasing consumption of alcohol will only fuel this dependence, says K.P.M. Basheer. Sabko maloom hai main sharaabi nahin   Phir bhi koi pilaye to main kya karoon  (Everyone knows that I am not an alcoholic  But what can I do if someone pours me a drink?) Pankaj Udhas’s   ghazal  couplet on the classic excuse of a drunkard echoes the fluidity of most State governments over alcohol taxation. “We don’t need the tax money from alcohol, you know,” seems to be the argument. “But if people want to get drunk what else can we do but tax the drink?” The truth: governments are increasingly relying on alcohol revenue to pay their bills. Roughly one-fifth of most State government budgets are funded by booze. And, that share is going up by the year . Big contributor With the exception of Gujarat, Nagaland, Mizoram and Manipur, wher...

Centre planning national alcohol policy

Centre planning national alcohol policy New Delhi, Nov 29, 2013, DHNS: The Union Health Ministry plans to come out with a national alcohol policy to suggest ways and means of reducing harm caused by alcohol as India is all set to adopt a voluntary target of reducing alcohol consumption due to its adverse public health consequences. The policy being framed by the ministry may suggest how the consumption of alcohol can be brought down by 5 per cent by 2020 and by an additional five per cent by 2025. It would emphasise on public health impacts of alcohol use and how it adds to India’s non-communicable disease burden. Currently, alcohol comes under the purview of the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment that looks into its societal impact. At the state level, alcohol is regulated by state excise policies that cover manufacturing, distribution and possession of alcohol.. ... http://www.deccanherald.com/content/371881/centre-planning-national-alcohol-policy.html
What teenagers should know about Drugs? (Part I) Technically, drugs are chemical substances that alter or affect the function of the body. Therefore, medicines are drugs, as are cigarettes, coffee and alcohol. However, here we are talking about illegal drugs or drugs with no good purpose (alcohol & cigarettes). People may be pressured into taking drugs to “fit in” with a particular crowd or they may take drugs to rebel or to get attention. Drug users come from all kinds of backgrounds. They are male and female, young and old, rich and poor, working and unemployed, from the city and the countryside—it does not matter. Drug use can affect anyone. To be continued... Share this with young kids around you. Leave your comments.
