In this phase of pandemic ,when everyone is stuck in their homes with very limited resources, AMSA- India conducted the workshop named ABC ( Addiction Battling Campaign ) under their Pubic Health and Research Department.  The workshop was held under the project Hope Stone ( Project Head : Safal Boob ) in collaboration with De' Sousa Foundation and Nada India Foundation . This amazing session of virtual learning began at 4pm sharp on Zoom platform which also went live on YouTube . Govt. and NGOs need to look at the issue of underutilization of existing drug treatment and rehabilitation services in the Punjab . For example Punjab’s first government-run rehabilitation centre for addicts was opened in Amritsar in 2015, according to press reports the patient so far count reflects its failure to become a trusted facility. This, even as addicts flock to private centres in the city and elsewhere. Not once has the Rs 5-crore, 50-bed facility been filled to capacity.   According to the PGI study, while 22 lakh Punjabis are addicted to alcohol and 16 lakh to tobacco, less than 1 per cent may be hooked on drugs. The single most common substance used is alcohol (22 lakh), followed by tobacco (16 lakh)....

Alcohol kills 3.3 million people worldwide each year, more than AIDS , tuberculosis and violence combined, the World Health Organization said Monday, warning that booze consumption was on the rise. Including drink driving, alcohol-induced violence and abuse, and a multitude of diseases and disorders, alcohol causes one in 20 deaths globally every year, the UN health agency said. “This actually translates into one death every 10 seconds,” Shekhar Saxena, who heads the WHO s Mental Health and Substance Abuse department, told reporters in Geneva. Alcohol caused some 3.3 million deaths in 2012, WHO said, equivalent to 5.9 percent of global deaths (7.6 percent for men and 4.0 percent for women). In comparison, HIV/AIDS is responsible for 2.8 percent, tuberculosis causes 1.7 percent of deaths and violence is responsible for just 0.9 percent, the study showed. KOZHIKODE: Alcohol is proving to be a key factor behind the murder cases being reported in the district. Police said of the total number of six murder cases reported in four months this year, five were committed under the influence of alcohol. Many other incidents in which intoxicated persons engage in arguments and manhandling were also reported. Influence of drugs and tobacco products are also pointed out as the major reason for clash between migrant labourers and locals. "The persons, under the influence of alcohol fail to realize the consequence of their action. Persons lose their reasoning skills and ability to control their emotions once they come under the influence of drugs and alcohol," said a police official. The southern Indian state of Kerala, often referred to as God's own country, has the best socio-economic indicators in the country. But its alarming alcohol addiction is earning the state a name for all the wrong reasons as the crime rate there also increases. The god of choice here is Bacchus, the Roman deity of wine. College student Raj Kumar has been in an alcohol rehabilitation clinic for more than two months in the state's capital, Thiruvananthapuram . A new study from the  University of Tennessee, Knoxville  has suggested that  alcohol  use is more likely to lead to violence between partners than marijuana.  Research among college students found that men under the influence of alcohol are more likely to perpetrate physical, psychological or sexual aggression against their partners than men under the influence of marijuana. Women, on the other hand, were more likely to be physically and psychologically aggressive under the influence of alcohol but, unlike men, they were also more likely to be psychologically aggressive under the influence of marijuana. The research has implications for domestic violence intervention and prevention programs. Rates of smoking, drinking and drug use are significantly higher among those who have psychotic disorders than among those in the general population, a new US study has claimed.  The study by researchers at  Washington  University School of Medicine in St Louis and the University of Southern California is the largest ever assessment of substance use among people with severe psychiatric illness.  The finding is of particular concern because individuals with severe mental illness are more likely to die younger than people without severe psychiatric disorders, researchers said.  "These patients tend to pass away much younger, with estimates ranging from 12 to 25 years earlier than individuals in the general population," said first author Sarah M Hartz, assistant professor of psychiatry at Washington University.  "They don't die from drug overdoses or commit suicide - the kinds of things you might suspect in severe psychiatric illness. Centre planning national alcohol policy New Delhi, Nov 29, 2013, DHNS: The Union Health Ministry plans to come out with a national alcohol policy to suggest ways and means of reducing harm caused by alcohol as India is all set to adopt a voluntary target of reducing alcohol consumption due to its adverse public health consequences. The policy being framed by the ministry may suggest how the consumption of alcohol can be brought down by 5 per cent by 2020 and by an additional five per cent by 2025. It would emphasise on public health impacts of alcohol use and how it adds to India’s non-communicable disease burden. Currently, alcohol comes under the purview of the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment that looks into its societal impact. What teenagers should know about Drugs? (Part I) Technically, drugs are chemical substances that alter or affect the function of the body. Therefore, medicines are drugs, as are cigarettes, coffee and alcohol.However, here we are talking about illegal drugs or drugs with no good purpose (alcohol & cigarettes). People may be pressured into taking drugs to “fit in” with a particular crowd or they may take drugs to rebel or to get attention. Drug users come from all kinds of backgrounds.They are male and female, young and old, rich and poor, working and unemployed, from the city and the countryside—it does not matter.
