OPINION Drug Free India? ....... Prof. T K Thomas 26 Feb, 2019  Two weeks back, this column carried a piece entitled “Hooch Victims: Not Just Numbers!” about death of over 40 people after drinking illicit liquor. A bigger hooch tragedy last week killed over 150 tea garden workers and over 300 hospitalized for critical care in Assam’s Golaghat. A friend asked why such frequent occurrence of hooch tragedies and deaths of poor and marginalized people and why no action is being taken to prevent such tragedies. Familiar with the problem of addiction in the country, he wondered why the government was more concerned about drug addiction and not on alcohol addiction. It took some time to explain to him how the two problems were being handled by two separate ministries of the government of India-Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment for drugs and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare for alcohol. What teenagers should know about Drugs? (Part II) "Marijuana" (pot, grass, weed, ganja) is usually smoked in a cigarette and sold in brown chunks. "Amphetamines" (including meth) and ecstasy are usually sold as pills, but can also come in a powder that can be mixed into a drink. Users simply swallow the pill or the drink. "Cocaine" , a white or brownish powder, is usually snorted through the nose, while "heroin" is generally injected with a syringe. Share this with teens around you. Leave your comments.

Visit to Bhim Basti and BalBhawan Mandi  Yesterday we visited the Bal Bhavan to see a graduation program of the radio club –a previous activity conducted by Suneel and Pallavi including several students in English class at Bhim Basti.   Dr.Smith in the year 2011at Pehchaan Radio club a project of Nada India   The graduation itself took more than an hour with speeches by several of the teenagers and an announcement of a 500-800 word essay contest (in Hindi of course).  There were about 75 kids aged 6-18 in the multiple graduation of different Nada India programs.  The constructive enthusiastic attention was impressive—considering the range of ages and topics.  This Bal Bhavan (meaning simply ‘children’s building’)is an extensive 20 building park with displays of paintings, drawings, etc, a large bird house, yoga posters, and other activity centers.  It is a product of prior decades when the Indian government emphasized social uplifting in urban...
