Youth first to make the universal health coverage a reality....

Prof.T K Thomas 04 Jun, 2019    “with the growing young population in India, it becomes extremely important to involve youth and understand their needs at the policy level. This can help them to effectively deal with the cross cutting issues like linkages between alcoholism, tobacco use and tuberculosis. The government must make the political decision to put youth first to make the universal health coverage a reality.” The annual World No Tobacco Day was observed on 31st May. The day is observed by the World Health Organization [WHO] and global partners as an opportunity to raise awareness on the harmful and deadly effects of tobacco use and secondhand smoke exposure and to discourage the use of tobacco in any form. This year’s focus for the day was, “Tobacco and lung health”. Everyone knows how tobacco affects our lungs. The WHO release says, the campaign will increase awareness on, “the negative impact that tobacco has on people’s lung health, from cancer, to chronic r...

Meet the change makers- ‘Ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages’

As the peer educators recount their biggest achievement so far was to be able to convince the tobacco retailers in their locality to not sell tobacco products to a person under 18.... By Vindhya| 13-09-2016 How elated I was to see such happy faces at Chattarpur located in the south west district of Delhi, India. Chattarpur is famous for Shree Adya Katyayani Shakti Peeth, popularly known as the Chattarpur temple. The young eyes were full of questions, one of them being; why is this clumsy saree clad woman here? What are we going to talk about today; Leadership, Health, career, future, past, what? Well, let me tell you, these young faces are the peer educators who work/volunteer/intern at Nada India in their free time and help reinforce healthy behaviors in their communities by educating families on non-communicable diseases. One of the peer educators, Chanda tells me very proudly, “I want to help people. I want to help them change their behavior.” Chanda is an ...

"Tete - a - Tete" with Reality ! -Rakshitha, Nada Intern

Making my best efforts to keep up my New Year resolution of not procrastinating things this year, I persuaded myself to sit down and begin my holiday homework. Just as I sat down, my phone buzzed as always at the wrong time. But what lay ahead of that conversation was simply something I wasn’t prepared for. My sociology teacher had called to inform me about the intern/volunteer ship programme open at Nada India Foundation. I was well acquainted with this organization since they had recently introduced the new RADIO CLUB – PEHCHAAN, in our school. I had attended a couple of workshops conducted by them and enjoyed it thoroughly. So, I had a rough idea of their work. However, the mess of notebooks and textbooks spread out on my study seemed to give me a sarcastic smile, sensing my hesitation; making me realize it time and again that they were the only ones I needed to be with for the next 8 months. With a little hope somewhere deep down I talked to my parents. I...
What Teenagers should know about Drugs? (Part III)   "Different drugs have different effects on the body" While effects vary from one person to the next, in general, "marijuana" gives users an initial “high”, or a dizzy, light-headed feeling, followed by a more relaxed sensation. "Amphetamines" provide an energy boost so that users can stay awake longer and work or dance more. "Cocaine" can give users a very happy, euphoric feeling when first taken, and it can make users forget they are hungry or tired. While these effects might sound nice, they do not last long. Many people get depressed and lonely afterwards and start feeling sick. Also, it is common for people who use drugs to seem confused, have red eyes, sweat a lot and not to care about their physical appearance. And, of course, there is the risk of becoming addicted.                       After effects of syringes of " Heroin " Shared by Neelam Verma (Nada Intern) on our Facebook group. A heroine is a female hero. "Heroin" is an illegal drug. Irony is that both gives pleasure (of course not for long) to you..but its always better to fantasize a heroine rather den falling for Heroin. - Vindhya
What teenagers should know about Drugs? (Part I) Technically, drugs are chemical substances that alter or affect the function of the body. Therefore, medicines are drugs, as are cigarettes, coffee and alcohol. However, here we are talking about illegal drugs or drugs with no good purpose (alcohol & cigarettes). People may be pressured into taking drugs to “fit in” with a particular crowd or they may take drugs to rebel or to get attention. Drug users come from all kinds of backgrounds. They are male and female, young and old, rich and poor, working and unemployed, from the city and the countryside—it does not matter. Drug use can affect anyone. To be continued... Share this with young kids around you. Leave your comments.
