LABOUR DAY MUSINGS! #covid19 #AlcoholHarms

OPINION Prof. T K Thomas May 5, 2020, " Vatsyayan says that “according to the Young India network for Good Health , the magnitude and severity of the harm caused by alcohol use is massive especially when it concerns coronavirus and noncommunicable diseases. To me, alcohol use is not a choice but a response to underlying larger psycho-social issues, trauma and chronic physical or emotional pain. And it requires a concerted and collective effort by individuals, communities, and all state governments in tandem with the centre, as the future of an entire generation is in peril. The need of the hour is to bring a comprehensive Drug and Alcohol Demand Reduction policy.” May First is celebrated all over the world as International Labour or Workers Day. It is ironic that its origin was in the capitalist country of the United States in the late 19th century and interestingly not in Russia and China which had communist revol...

“Vendors display tobacco products in ways that are appealing to children and youth.. Alarming

Investigators documented that in 225 tobacco points of sale observed, 91% of displays were at 1 metre – child’s eye level, 54% had no visible health warning; and 90 per cent of displays were, beside candies, sweets and toys, items marketed to children,” noted the study. A report released on Wednesday finds that  tobacco  companies in India are systematically targeting children as young as eight by selling tobacco products and placing tobacco advertisements near schools. These tactics, happening all over the country, is a clear violation of Section 5 and 6 of Cigarettes & Other Tobacco Products Act, it said. To gather evidence regarding tobacco products being sold around educational institutions in violation of the law, two groups working in the area of tobacco control -- Consumer Voice and Voluntary Health Association of India -- undertook a study in 20 cities across six states in India. Titled Tiny Targets, the study was conducted to determine the extent of tobac...

**Prof. T K Thomas *Radio DATE ( D rug, Alcohol , Tobacco Education ) ......................I left All India Radio [AIR] in1987. An year or two later I was invited to write a 30 part serial Radio DATE [Drug, Alcohol , Tobacco Education ]. The serial was a joint venture of AIR and the Indian Council of Medical Research [ICMR]. At that time I was involved in a study of the problem of drugs and alcohol in India. I had travelled extensively in the country wherever major drug or alcohol problem existed. I was under the impression before the research that substance abuse and addiction were social problems on account of deviant behaviour or at the most medical or mental health problems . But my research for the Radio DATE programme proved that the ramifications of addiction comprised drain on domestic budgets ,state resources, poverty ,deprivation ,domestic  violence  law and order  problems including   narco-terrorism. Why celebs fall prey to drugs and alcohol?

Success, adulation of millions, moolah and plum perks. The cult figures in music get all these things on a platter at an early age.  Then, what is it that turns the applecart upside down and drives them towards disaster, drugs and more - as in the case of Amy Winehouse? TOI speaks to some well-known members of the musical fraternity in the city to glean the facts...  Whither support  According to singer Pinkoo Joseph, it's not the western music that should be blamed, but the disturbed childhood that plays havoc with these singers' lives, who court success big-time. "Here in  India , we have a strong family support and a value system that's imbibed in us since childhood. But, in most of the western societies, parents aren't able to do that because they themselves aren't exactly the role models. So, these celebs easily fall prey to drugs and alcohol," says he.  Handling success  But, the drug abuse issues can't be blamed on western society alone,...

“Drugs are a paramount obstacle for social and democratic development in societies all over the world.

Global Health Starts with Drug-Free Communities The most successful approaches in drug use prevention involve the critical role of families, schools, and communities to build on protective factors to ensure safe and healthy childhood and adolescent years and to provide viable and legitimate livelihoods for adults. Globally every year an estimated 210 million people use illicit drugs, with almost 200,000 of them dying annually. Drug use and drug trafficking are not only a health threat, but also threaten global stability and socio-economic development across the world. In 2008, when the world community gathered at the end of a 10-year period to fight drugs, Member States were still “gravely concerned about the growing threat posed by the world drug problem.” They re-committed themselves to “eliminate or significantly reduce” the overall drug supply and demand by 2019. “The context in which we observe this year’s World Drug Day is an ambitious but visionary challenge the world co...

Pehchaan Radio club members protest MS Dhoni's appearance in liquor advertisement

Children as old as six years are increasingly displaying inappropriate behaviour due to excessive sexual and violent content being shown in advertisements, video games and music videos.

Melbourne, April 30: Children as old as six years are increasingly displaying inappropriate behaviour due to excessive sexual and violent content being shown in advertisements, video games and music videos. Following a similar complaint of sexualizing young kids, a soft drink company has been forced to pull its advertisement.   Australian Childhood Foundation chief executive, Joe Tucci has said that nearly 200 such kids are referred to his service each year, a 20-fold increase from the past decade. "There are children displaying aberrant sexual behaviour who can't even tie their shoelaces yet," The Courier Mail quoted him as saying. "Sexualised images show that to be successful and powerful, you need to display this behaviour," he added. Dr Tucci further said that some of the children displaying aberrant sexual behaviour were victims of abuse themselves, but a growing number were not. "We ask children in counselling where they get these kind of ideas. They ...
