WHA75 adopted the WHO Global Alcohol Action Plan unanimously and in doing so endorses a comprehensive plan with ambitious targets to accelerate action on alcohol as public health priority. Nada Young India Network demands Tobacco Product Display Ban at Point of Sale

Comprehensive advertising bans are most effective.  As India works to recover from the devastating health toll of the COVID-19 pandemic, policymakers must act to adopt strong tobacco control measures and eliminate POS tobacco product displays to protect youth from experimenting with tobacco products and former smokers from relapsing. CURRENT COTPA REGULATIONS: Section 5(1) of COTPA provides for a comprehensive ban on all tobacco advertising. Section 5(2) provides for exceptions from the general prohibition for advertising : displayed at the entrance or inside a warehouse or a shop where cigarettes or other tobacco products are offered for distribution or sale .   PROPOSED COTPA AMENDMENT: Prohibit the display of tobacco products inside or outside any warehouse or store that offers tobacco products for sale; require retailers to ensure all tobacco products are kept in a closed container or dispenser that is not accessible to any member of the public. New World Health Organization research shows a strong correlation between rising incomes, alcohol consumption and booze-related deaths in much of Asia By ALAN BOYD SYDNEY, OCTOBER 6, 2018 Rising incomes are driving up alcohol consumption in much of Asia and the Pacific, with death rates from excessive drinking in Thailand, Vietnam, South Korea and Russia now among the highest anywhere in the world. Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific are the only two regions that have seen increased per capita consumption since 2000, according to the latest  Global Status Report   compiled by the World Health Organization (WHO). Share your story on how NCDs affect you. Science knows about the correlation of cancer and alcohol use since the 1980s. The International Agency for Research in Cancer (IARC), the WHO’s research body, classifies alcohol as class one carcinogen since 1988. “Indian society is losing more than it is gaining due to alcohol” Alcohol can also significantly drain family budgets, since costs for NCD-related health care, medicines, and costs for alcohol diverts the household’s income and resources from ensuring food and nutrition security and from basic education. the adverse physical and mental health, social, environmental and economic consequences of NCDs affect all, particularly the poor and vulnerable populations. Nada India has been working on prevention of NCDs with a focus on alcohol and tobacco use at primary and secondary levels by using treatment readiness, peer based approach and capacity building of peer led rehabilitation centers.
