Young people and noncommunicable diseases – vulnerable to disease, vital for change

In fact, for cancer, diabetes, chronic lung disease, and cardiovascular diseases - so-called noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) - more than two-thirds of preventable adult deaths are associated with behavior that started in adolescence. Many young people are well aware of how drastically NCDs will affect their generation in the current system and have taken the challenge to change the discourse for a healthier global population. Yet, youth voices are often dismissed or tokenized in political conversations. This is despite the many examples of youth making positive change at all levels of society. #BoysAreChanging As many as 1,614 rapes and 1,456 other sexual assaults were committed by juveniles in the country in 2017, reveal the latest data of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). Over 40,000 juveniles were caught across the country in 2017 for their alleged involvement in various offences, with 72 per cent of them belonging to the age group from 16 to 18 years. There were 1,614 cases of rape against juveniles in 2017, 1,456 cases of assault on women with intent to outrage their modesty and 46 cases of attempt to rape, among others, the NCRB said.The government had in 2015 passed the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, which provides for the trial of juveniles in the age group of 16 to 18 years as adult if involved in heinous offences. बलात्कार और हिंसा की घटनाओं ने भारत की छवि को नुकसान पहुंचाया है. #UHCDAY Keep The Promise.... 70% of NCDs Adult deaths are linked to risk factors that starts in adolescence

“ Seventy percent of the preventable adult deaths from NCDs are linked to risk factors that start in adolescence, providing a key opportunity for prevention.” Wh at are NCDs? Cardiovascular disease (CVD)  in children can be congenital or acquired. Globally, 13.9 million children are a ff ected by CVD. Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) is the most common chronic heart disease in children. Cancer  is a leading cause of death for children and adolescents worldwide. Existing data suggests close to 6 million children had cancer in 2017. This may be an underestimate as many countries do not have adequate surveillance systems for childhood cancer. Chronic respiratory disorders  (CRDs), including asthma, respiratory allergies and lung diseases, are a major source of disability in children.
