Nada India's forum on Himachal Tourism and Tobacco Control

New Delhi: Tobacco use remains a significant public health challenge, impacting communities and the environment. Himachal Pradesh, despite commendable efforts, grapples with tobacco-related issues. Simultaneously, the state is renowned for its scenic beauty and ecotourism potential. 

To address this Nada India Foundation organized Youth Forum on "Youth Perspectives on Tourism and Tobacco Control"   for young minds to explore the intersections between tobacco control, sustainable tourism, and environmental well-being.

Rajinder Kumar, Head of Dept cum Assistant Professor, Department of Travel and Tourism Management, University of Ladakh, was the guest speaker at online session organized on 16th February 2024

The speaker discussed on variant topics. Importance of eco-tourism in Himachal Pradesh: It was Explored how tobacco use can undermine the principles of sustainable and responsible tourism.

Highlighted the potential economic and health benefits of promoting a tobacco-free environment in tourist destinations. The speaker Shared some stories of youth-led initiatives in advocating for tobacco control measures and emphasized the role of young people in influencing policy changes and promoting healthier communities.

Challenges Faced by Himachal Pradesh: So specific challenges related to tobacco use in popular tourist spots was identified. also impact of tobacco on the environment, including issues of littering and air pollution. He Examined the tactics employed by the tobacco industry in tourist areas.
and called for strategies to counteract the influence of the tobacco industry on tourism policies with focus on existing tobacco control laws in Himachal Pradesh.

Questions and Discussion with Participants:

•             What innovative approaches can be adopted to raise awareness about the health and environmental impact of tobacco uses among tourists?

•             In what ways can the tourism industry collaborate with youth-led initiatives to strengthen tobacco control measures?

•             How can the government enhance the enforcement of existing tobacco control laws in popular tourist spots?

•             What role can educational institutions play in promoting a tobacco-free culture, especially in areas frequented by tourists.

•             How can technology and social media be leveraged to amplify youth voices and campaigns against tobacco in tourism?

•             What strategies can be implemented to ensure that sustainable tourism practices align with efforts to reduce tobacco consumption?

The Youth Forum aims to harness the enthusiasm and creativity of young individuals to envision a Tobacco-Free Himachal where tourism coexists harmoniously with health and environmental well-being. By fostering collaboration and sharing insights, the forum endeavors to contribute to a future where Himachal Pradesh becomes a beacon for sustainable, tobacco-free tourism.
