 EDUCATIONIST, MEDICAL EXPERTS, GOVERNMENT BODIES AND NGOs CALL FOR EFFECTIVE TOBACCO CONTROL IN PUNJAB WITH HIGHER TAX AND STRONGER COTPA ACT EVERY CITIZEN OF PUNJAB MUST BE MADE AWARE OF THE IMPLICATIONS AND BENEFITS OF STRONG COTPA AMENDMENT 2020: DR. NARESH CHAWLA, DISTRICT TB OFFICER

Nada India Young Network for Good Health had brought together multiple stakeholders of Punjab to discuss different ways in which Educationists, Medical Experts, Government Agencies , NGOs and Youth Groups extended their support for the COTPA Amendment 2020 and operationalisation of the State and the National Multi-sectoral Action Plan (NMAP) for the control of tobacco with a youth-driven campaign and activities. The stakeholders also called on the government to increase taxes on tobacco products for stricter control. The State-level Multi-Stakeholder consultation was addressed by academicians from Guru Nanak Dev University and Amritsar Group of College. District TB Officer Naresh Chawla, District Tobacco Control Officer Karan Mehra, Dr. Aditya Parihar and many government representatives. 

"The awareness around COTPA and its impact for a healthy society should be taught not just to smokers but to everyone in society.

 A strong COTPA Act will create a healthy Society," District TB Officer Naresh Chawla said. As per the Global Adult Tobacco Survey in Punjab in 2017 "among the youth in Punjab, 13.4% of all adults either smoke tobacco and/ or use smokeless tobacco. 31.4% are exposed to secondhand smoking at home while 23.3% are exposed to tobacco smoke at the workplace and 15.8% are exposed at public places." India News By IANS, New Delhi: A new report by a group of NGOs Tuesday highlighted the ill-effects of advertising and marketing of alcohol on young people, and proposed a comprehensive ban on all kinds of marketing strategies that seek to portray drinking as normal. "A separate government agency should be formed to monitor this ban," said the report titled "Alcohol Marketing and Regulatory Policy Environment in India" released here.
