Subject: Parliamentary
Forum for Children
Dear Smt Sumitra Mahajan,
Greetings from our
coalition of voluntary organisations working for the rights of children in
India.
We are writing to seek your
kind attention to the fact that since May 2014, when the present Parliament was
elected, the appointment of the Parliamentary Forum on Children has been
pending. We request you to appoint this forum.
Given the fact India is
home to the world's largest population of children, and recognising that children's
needs and rights deserve due recognition and attention in national affairs, we
believe this forum should be operating and raising due attention to both the
many challenges and the many opportunities of addressing children's rights in
India.
We note that the Government
is soon to adopt a new national plan of action for children. Present realities
make it important for this move to get due attention from our legislators. We
note also that India's official adoption of the 2015/2030 Sustainable Development
Goals implies dedicated national action to benefit children on critical issues
such as health, nutrition, education and protection. Rising incidence of
natural disasters and climate uncertainties is adding to risks children
face.
We believe national
measures to address these concerns, and the governmental initiatives to improve
conditions merit the active engagement of our national legislators, and we
would like to repose confidence in their potential to bring about needed
changes for children, as promised in our national Constitution.
The Parliamentary Forum is
an important mechanism for such positive advocacy and
leadership. Recalling your own previous services to children at the helm
of the subject ministry some years ago, we look forward to your personal
interest and leadership in activating this forum, and energising it as its
Chairperson.
