Early life presents a wealth of opportunities for NCD prevention, as behavior patterns related to NCDs, including unhealthy diets, tobacco use and smoke exposure, physical inactivity, and harmful use of alcohol, are often initiated during childhood and adolescence. In addition, early life influences such as maternal under- or over-nutrition, low birthweight, secondhand tobacco smoke exposure, and newborn overfeeding increase the risk of obesity and other NCDs later in life.
