Every year, on 31 May, WHO and partners everywhere mark World No Tobacco Day, highlighting the health risks associated with tobacco use and advocating for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption. Tobacco use is the single most preventable cause of death globally and is currently responsible for killing one in in 10 adults worldwide.
Mr.Suneel Vatsyayan, chairman ,Nada India Foundation was invited to join a live discussion on the occasion of World No Tobacco Day 31st May by Loksabha Television (Indian Parliament National Channel). The theme for World No Tobacco Day 2013 is: Ban tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship. ,Dr.P.K.Julka All India Institute of Medical Sciences and Mr.Mukesh Kejeriwal senior correspondent Jagran, National Hindi Newspaper. Evidence shows that comprehensive advertising bans lead to reductions in the numbers of people starting and continuing smoking. Statistics show that banning tobacco advertising and sponsorship is one of the most cost-effective ways to reduce tobacco demand and thus a tobacco control "best buy". Mr.Vatsyayan emphasized on surrogate advertising and how tobacco brands and companies promote their brands through selling and advertising of non tobacco products like stationary for children ,cloths etc. Nada India appealed to the government to ban indirect advertisement & branding and come out with a surveillance plan. Media education among children is important to counter such moves by these tobacco companies. He highlighted the importance of Radio clubs by Nada India to educate children about influence of the media on young minds. Mr.Vatsyayan also advocated for school substance abuse prevention policy which should include tobacco and other household chemicals (Correction fluid etc.)
