As the days passed by, my horizon
expanded and reached at a new level where many things were still to learn,
unlearn and relearn.Working with Nada India Foundation (NIF) has given me a
new approach towards society and to develop the quality of serving others
first.
Our next agenda was to have a
workshop at homeless shelters at Yamuna Pusta and Jama Masjid. I was dreaded to
be among the drug addicts because of my stereotypical mindset for such people
that they are nothing but useless bunch of losers. One of the main purpose of
having this workshop is to make feel people about their worth in life which
also proved me wrong the moment I got to know them personally and at the same
time changed my mind set.
Suneel Sir successfully organized
counseling session with the homeless people and their staff, patiently listened
to their problems, hardships they face in day-to-day life. They talked
endlessly of how drugs have ruined their life and how vulnerable they have
become.
To motivate them, we had a
drawing and painting session which in turns proved to be mood changing and
fruitful as it not only rejuvenated their mind but also for a while made them
to forget their sorrows, pain and loneliness. While counseling, Suneel sir made
them realize that because they are drug addicts doesn’t mean life is finished.
They are also the beautiful creatures of God and everybody has a hidden talent
and with focused mind they can also lead a normal happy life.
For instance, I came across a
painting full of English Quotes and was amused that a person who is only a
‘thelle wala’ can also writes such correct English.
On a closer talk with him, he
told me his life’s story that: How hardships and bad conditions have made him
to live in a shelter.
This man, in his 50’s, hails from
Shimla, studied till high school, comes from a very good family with his
brother has his own start-up at Shimla. Due to life’s unending sorrows has made
him like the way he is today.
Also, another woman who is a
victim of domestic violence made a brave decision by leaving her husband’s
house and coming to live in a shelter with her two daughters. Now, she has
accepted her life as it is and hoping for brighter and better future for her
daughters.
These two instances have taught a
great big lesson that no matter what comes to your way, one shouldn’t lose
self-confidence and should have the courage to face the problem.
