The International Day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking was observed on 26th June, 2012 at Sathy Sai auditorium, Lodhi Road, New Delhi.

Addressing the gathering, Shri Mukul Wasnik,the Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment said, "In order to create awareness, the Ministry is launching a major awareness campaign by using the mobile sms, print media, electronic media etc. so as to reach maximum people."
In his speech, the Chief Guest Sh. Ajay Maken, Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, said, "The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has introduced mandatory doping test in all national, state and university level sports competition." Highlighting the increasing use of drugs among sportsmen, Shri Maken said, during a recent drill by National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA), several school children were found using banned performance enhancement substances. He also stated that in order to render valuable service for the development of the nation, the youth need to be mentally and physically sound.
The representative of the UN Secretary General, Ms.Cristina Albertin read out the message of the Secretary General, which noted that drug abuse and illicit trafficking continue to have a profoundly negative impact on development and stability across the world. Illicit drugs and related criminal networks undermine the rule of law. The impunity with which they go about their business causes tremendous fear and sows disillusion with governance at all levels, she said.
Those who were present during the occasion included Shri D. Napolean, the Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, Shri Anoop Srivastava, Additional Secretary Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Shri T.R Meena, Joint Secretary (Social Defence), and senior official and representatives from several NGOs.
