Cops' False Reporting May Be Real Reason??? States known for their high consumption of liquor have reported less road deaths caused due to driving under influence of alcohol.Goa, Kerala, Sikkim and Tripura reported only one fatality each while Bengal, Manipur, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Daman & Diu, Lakshadweep and Puducherry registered no death due to drunk driving in 2013. Six other states and UTs including Delhi and Gujarat reported less than 10 deaths. The data is encouraging at a time when India is struggling to reduce its road fatalities. According to the latest road accident report of the road transport ministry , the number of accidents caused due to driving under influence of al cohol and drugs decreased to 20,290 in 2012 from 23,979 the previous year. The ruling Congress-led UDF in Kerala has decided to shut down over 700 liquor bars attached to hotels below the five-star categories besides make Sundays "dry days." The decision, taken in a meeting of the UDF leadership presided by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, also marked the resolution of the long-drawn feud in the state unit of the Congress and the coalition over the question of renewing licences of 418 bars which were found to be lacking in quality. The decisions will be formally recommended to the Chandy Cabinet to act upon. The UDF leadership had earlier resolved to take firm measures to bring down availability of liquor to the common man and take the state to its goal of "total prohibition" in a phased manner. Briefing reporters after the meeting, Chandy said the 418 bars which had been lying closed since April this year would not be re-opened. The Global Status Report On Alcohol And Health 2014, Released By The World Health Organization (WHO) Has Said That The Consumption Of Alcohol In India Has Jumped Between 2008 To 2012. The WHO has compiled the data taking into account alcoholic over the age of 15 and above. The report mentioned that around 30% of the total population of India consumed alcohol in the year 2010.  93% of alcohol was consumed in the form of spirits, followed by beer with 7% and less than 1% of the population consumed wine. The per capita consumption of alcohol in the country increased from 1.6 liters in 2003-2005, to 2.2 liters in 2010-2012. Highest amount of alcohol was consumed in Kerala. With an average individual over the age of 15 consumed over 8 liters of alcohol per annum in this state. Maharashtra and Punjab followed Kerala.
