"Alcohol shops on sides of highways shall be closed," Gadkari tweeted

In a bid to bring down road accidents by 50 per cent in the next two years, road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari on Saturday said alcohol shops on either side of highways should be closed.  "Alcohol shops on sides of highways shall be closed," Gadkari tweeted.  He said that the government has set a target of bringing down loss of lives due to accidents by 50 per cent within at most two years.  Suneel Vatsayan also raised the issue to close alcohol shop on highways through his IOGT blog   The government is also setting up a Motor Vehicle and Road Safety Regulation Authority.  India has a dubious distinction which does not make us proud, Gadkari said, adding, vehicle safety standards shall also be improved and manufacturers' lobby shall be tackled appropriately.  The minister said he will write to the home ministry on need for amending various Police Acts to prevent victimization of good samaritans.  "We have begun a programme to rectify prob

DAV School joins Nada India campaign drug free school: Child'Right

It was heartening  to find the Principal and the teachers of the school open to ideas and their sincerity of purpose. The initial discussions between the principal  revealed that there was meeting of minds on the ground realities of the social dynamics reflected in the frictions that are evident in filial relations and the relations between the students, their parents  and the school authorities. Our deliberations with the principal focused on the problems of lifestyles which have resulted  in  tolerance if not acceptance of alcohol, alien to traditional families,  as part of the new habits, domestic discord, lack of parental control, influence of  the new media lack of proper communication at home etc.  These maladies are further accentuated by  the negative impact of the exposure to the  influence of celebrity culture and lifestyles , peer pressure and unobstructed access to ideas and substances. The situation indeed is alarming and early intervention by the school and profes

Decline in drunk driving deaths in year 2013 ...Cops' False Reporting reason behind?

Cops' False Reporting May Be Real Reason??? States known for their high consumption of liquor have reported less road deaths caused due to driving under influence of alcohol.Goa, Kerala, Sikkim and Tripura reported only one fatality each while Bengal, Manipur, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Daman & Diu, Lakshadweep and Puducherry registered no death due to drunk driving in 2013. Six other states and UTs including Delhi and Gujarat reported less than 10 deaths. The data is encouraging at a time when India is struggling to reduce its road fatalities. According to the latest road accident report of the road transport ministry , the number of accidents caused due to driving under influence of al cohol and drugs decreased to 20,290 in 2012 from 23,979 the previous year. Total deaths decreased significantly to 6,463 last year from 7,835 in 2012. The big change is primarily on account of UP and Jharkhand witnessing sharp drop in fatalities due to drunk driving. The data shows that thou

Time To Say "Cheers"? or Time To learn from Kerala?

After 17 years of being a dry state, Mizoram is relaxing its curbs on alcohol. Ratnadip Choudhury  explains how the booze ban was a bane in the Christian-dominated state James Pachuau, 23, takes out his Royal Enfield motorcycle every late afternoon and zips down the roads of Mizoram’s capital Aizawl, towards Lengpui on the outskirts, where the state has its lone airport. He parks his bike with several others lined up on the roadside. Hundreds of Mizo youth in their 20s and 30s are gathering in front of a group of shacks where Zu, Mizoram’s locally brewed liquor, is sold. Bootleggers hover around, making discreet deals for foreign liquor, sold at three times the MRP and often spurious. They earn in lakhs and it is anybody’s guess that they cannot be operating without taking Excise Department officials and policemen into confidence. It’s an everyday af fair in a state where alcohol has been banned for the past 17 years. And in this period, more than 1,700 people have been treated fo

Nada India welcomes the Kerala Govt.'s decision to declare all Sundays as dry days (Temperance Days)

The ruling Congress-led UDF in Kerala has decided to shut down over 700 liquor bars attached to hotels below the five-star categories besides make Sundays "dry days." The decision, taken in a meeting of the UDF leadership presided by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, also marked the resolution of the long-drawn feud in the state unit of the Congress and the coalition over the question of renewing licences of 418 bars which were found to be lacking in quality. The decisions will be formally recommended to the Chandy Cabinet to act upon. The UDF leadership had earlier resolved to take firm measures to bring down availability of liquor to the common man and take the state to its goal of "total prohibition" in a phased manner. Briefing reporters after the meeting, Chandy said the 418 bars which had been lying closed since April this year would not be re-opened. Also, another 312 bars will be closed down, subject to legal advice. In case there were some legal hit

Importing Alcohol Harm Via Diplomats And Big Alcohol...Suneel Vatsyayan

Email Share on Twitter Share on Facebook In India, alcohol is not as common as in the Western world (remember: Europe is the region in the world that consumes alcohol most heavily.). Alcohol in India is a controlled and luxury item unlike packaged water or juice. But also India is burdened by alcohol harm and therefore we advocate for better regulations on local and state level as well as for a national alcohol policy. Some regulations are in place already. For instance regulations concerning labelling and packaging. The bottle and package design gives the alcohol product a deceptive identity instead of introducing the customer to the ingredients honestly. Alcoholic beverages are not classified as single ingredient foods and so the manufacturer in foreign countries needs to follow the labelling requirement as per “The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India” (  http://www.fssai.gov.in/ ) (Packaging and Labelling) Regulations, 2011. Recently this measure has drawn at

Alcohol kills 3.3 million people worldwide each year, more than AIDS...

Alcohol kills 3.3 million people worldwide each year, more than AIDS , tuberculosis and violence combined, the World Health Organization said Monday, warning that booze consumption was on the rise. Including drink driving, alcohol-induced violence and abuse, and a multitude of diseases and disorders, alcohol causes one in 20 deaths globally every year, the UN health agency said. “This actually translates into one death every 10 seconds,” Shekhar Saxena, who heads the WHO s Mental Health and Substance Abuse department, told reporters in Geneva. Alcohol caused some 3.3 million deaths in 2012, WHO said, equivalent to 5.9 percent of global deaths (7.6 percent for men and 4.0 percent for women). In comparison, HIV/AIDS is responsible for 2.8 percent, tuberculosis causes 1.7 percent of deaths and violence is responsible for just 0.9 percent, the study showed. More people in countries where alcohol consumption has traditionally been low, like China and India, are also increasingly taking up t

Alcohol consumption behind most criminal cases: Police

KOZHIKODE: Alcohol is proving to be a key factor behind the murder cases being reported in the district. Police said of the total number of six murder cases reported in four months this year, five were committed under the influence of alcohol. Many other incidents in which intoxicated persons engage in arguments and manhandling were also reported. Influence of drugs and tobacco products are also pointed out as the major reason for clash between migrant labourers and locals. "The persons, under the influence of alcohol fail to realize the consequence of their action. Persons lose their reasoning skills and ability to control their emotions once they come under the influence of drugs and alcohol," said a police official. The latest of the murder cases involving liquor as villain was reported in Kozhikode rural police station limit on April 27. A 32-year-old from Thrissur was murdered by a Kottayam native with the support of two Tamil Nadu natives. Tussle between the vi
