The Delhi High Court Wednesday sought the Centre's response on a plea by students of a private school seeking ban on sale of junk food and aerated drinks in and around educational institutions. A bench of Acting Chief Justice AK Sikri and Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw sought the Centre's reply on students' plea and listed the matter for further hearing on January 4. While the plea had been made by civil society Uday Foundation, the Father Angel School students today sought to be made party to the court proceeding on the plea for ban on sale of junk food and aerated drinks in and around schools. Now a hooch tragedy:Alcoholism is a social menace that needs to be tackled in a sensitive, intelligent, multi-pronged way. Driving it underground, to dangerous devices, is clearly not the way.

Less than a week after more than 90 women, men, and children died in a calamitous fire at the AMRI hospital in Kolkata, illicit brew has claimed the lives of about 150 people, at Sangrampur in the South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. Preliminary reports indicate that the hooch was sold in sachets, priced between Rs.7 and Rs.20, virtually opposite a police post in the area. Starting with a couple of deaths early in the morning, the toll kept rising through the day and touched 80 by daybreak next day. Most of the victims complained of body pain, stomach cramps, vomitting, and a burning sensation. The health authorities diagnosed the early deaths as due to “cardio-respiratory failure” arising out of methyl poisoning. Evidently, licensed liquor sold through the legal retail system was out of the reach of the poor, who fell into the trap of the hooch trade. At last report, about a hundred victims were in hospital, most of them said to be recovering.....

Proactive community policing is a way out to prevent such accidents.. now figure has reached more than 75

Rising consumerism poses challenges Email Share on Twitter Share on Facebook “I deserve to be different from others . I belong to the new consuming class  because I worked for it. I earned it .  This is a better way to prove my social mobility by having a right (still limited right as per income ) to consume,” says Anil, 30 year old from  Delhi NCR Gurgoan  who working in a Multi National Company. The new class, consuming class, is found among the traditional middle class in India, especially in metropolitan cities.  This is really a market driven new identity  which is built on a happy or unhappy past. People would like to keep this consuming class identity as a sign of success. In a recent  Hindustan Times news paper  article with the headline “The many classes  in the middle” the  writer Rama Bijapurkar  talks about a new class among the middle class, whose essential qualification is  discontented consumerism or so to say  aspiring consumerism – ready to consume above a threshold
